Remarkable Set of 12 Mahogany and Rattan Wicker Cane Arm Chairs by John Hutton for Donghia

$90,000

This piece is owned and offered directly for sale by Tom Robinson Modern.

A breathtaking rare set of twelve (12) organic dining chairs from the limited production Merbau collection designed by the esteemed John Hutton (1947-2006) for Donghia, circa 1995. Examples from this particular low production series are nearly impossible to find for sale. While all Donghia furniture offerings were low production, this particular series is most elusive. Google away and you will find that there are no comps for a set of this magnitude. Mr. Hutton was the firm design director from 1978-1998 and was responsible for many of the now iconic Donghia designs produced during that period. While Hutton’s talent was always recognized within design and architectural circles, this influential modern designer’s work is finally becoming more commonly recognized and appreciated by the mainstream. Here, Hutton’s chic design is clearly influenced by the ground-breaking seating examples produced by Adrien Audoux & Frida Minet, circa 1950. Stout heavy mahogany construction with seat and back in heavy textural wicker style cane. The cane seat is executed over a solid mahogany seat platform for support and durability. Design, material selection and craftsmanship that is beyond incredible. Stout, sturdy, comfortable and built for heavy routine use. Breathtaking organic jewelry designed to anchor an important dining room. Excellent Restored Condition. The frames have been professionally cleaned and re-lacquered. All cane seats and backs are intact, complete and pristine. Arm height is 25.5 inches. Retains the Maker mark. The price is for the set of twelve (12) chairs.
